EcoReporters Share Annual Earth Month Recycling Event
by The Grade 4 Earth Month Committee — Terry Fox Elementary School, Laval, QC
May 2010 — The Grade 4 Earth Month Committee at Terry Fox Elementary School in Laval, Quebec had great fun organizing a very important event – the annual recycling of pop bottles and cans which started on April 1st and ended April 30th. Of course, this was a really big job, so we asked all the Grade 3 and 4 classes to help us.
Here is how it worked: everyday a different class in grade 3 or 4 was in charge of going around the whole school collecting the bottles and cans from each class. Then, it was back to class to sort, remove the tabs from the cans, count and bag all that was collected! The bottles and cans were sorted into groups of 100, so we did a little math at the same time. At the end of the month, all the bottles and cans were brought to the grocery store to exchange for money. We collected 3000 bottles and cans. We got 5 cents for each, so there was a little more math to do! The money will be donated to a good cause called The Big Give, which helps a school in Africa.
As for the tabs, we collected several thousand and they were sent off to a recycling company where they will be weighed in exchange for money. This money is used to help pay for a special kind of medical treatment for a special little boy.
We would like to thank Mr. Lina, who took off work for a day and came to our school to pick up all the bags of bottles and cans, and brought them to the grocery store for us.
