Recycling Committee in Terrenceville, Newfoundland

April 2010 — St. Joseph’s All Grade supports a great recycling program. This program is run by our students, Brooke Watson, Stacey Lavhey, and Rebekah Kearley, with the assistance of our custodian, Bessie Mitchell. The recyclables are donated by the students and the residents of Terrenceville, Grand le Pierre, and English Harbour East.

Each week, the girls on the recycling committee volunteer their time to clean, count, and separate each recyclable, preparing them for the recycling company. The committee also offers great incentives for donating recyclables, with prizes of $100.00 and many consolation prizes.

This program has been a very valuable fundraiser for our school, generating thousands of dollars towards the purchase of sports equipment, electronics, and school trips. Everyone helps and everyone gets something back!

On Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010, I had the opportunity to interview the recycling committee. I asked each one of the girls why they were interested in the recycling program. First, Brooke stated that she was interested because she wanted to help the environment because of pollution, and recycling is a good and easy way to help. Stacey also said it was good for the environment and it also helps raise money for our school. Rebekah said that they also save the tabs from cans to be used to make wheelchairs. Finally, Mrs. Mitchell said that she is interested because it cuts down on waste.

We owe a big thank you to our recycling committee for their hard work and dedication in helping our school and our environment.

Congratulations, Terrenceville, NL! I'm a teacher, from St. Bernard's, working on a native reserve in Nelson House, NB. It's great to see that you rural kids are really in the game! Keep up the great work!
