Time to “Pitch–In”

May 2011 —  Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if everybody littered and no one picked up garbage? There’s no question that our planet would become a giant wasteland. For example, if a community had 30 people and each person threw 10 pieces of trash on the ground each day throughout the week, that would be 2,100 pieces of waste. WOW! We would literally be swimming in garbage. “Pitch-In Canada” is a non-profit organization that helps prevent just that. Since it was founded there have been 19,000 projects across Canada. Millions of volunteers have donated their hands and time in order to pick up trash.

Our class, 3P, and the rest of our school population at Heritage Heights, took on a “Pitch-In” Challenge to make our playground and community litter–free. As a class of 27 students, we managed to collect 12 bulging bags of junk. We learned that, as a school, we should be more aware of the environment and make sure to put our trash where it belongs – in the garbage can! We also discovered that a small group of committed kids can make a BIG difference.

We encourage all Canadians to take on the challenge and PITCH–IN! Our country will be a better place if we all do our part.
