Earth Day Assembly
With notes from Eco-Reporters Tosca and Cheyane — Haldane Elementary School, Chase, BC
June 2010 — This year’s theme was “Think Globally—Act Locally”. Our day began with an assembly at 8:45 a.m. for the whole student body. The event was welcomed by Peter Michel and the student drummers. Special guests were: Mayor of Chase, Harry Danyluk, Karl deBruijn, Assistant Superintendent—Elementary Education School District 73, Vic Pages and Rollie Phillips from the Lions Club. Mayor Danyluk thanked Haldane students and staff for their tremendous efforts to inform the public about the need to protect our environment and thanked the students for all the activities they do to make Chase and surrounding communities a cleaner place to live and spoke of the recycling program that has begun in Chase. Mr. Danyluk and the Town of Chase donated $400 to the Haldane Playground fund and $100 to the Haldane Green Kids. Mr de Bruijn congratulated the students of Haldane for their Green action and providing a positive example for other schools in the district to follow. Mr. Dickson of the TNRD spoke of the importance of recycling and the fact that you could fill 16 Olympic size swimming pools with the amount of recycled material collected. Mrs. Clare led a student group with the song “Reduce, Recycle, Re-use”.
The winning Division of the Pop Can Pull Tab Challenge was announced as Miss Norman’s class–Enjoy those green glazed donuts! Over 340 pounds of pop can pull tables were collected by participating classes. The Clean and Green Team from Chase Secondary presented their video, “Under Pressure” about the need to recycle as our landfills are filling to capacity. The “Blue Bag Cookie Monster” made an appearance from Chase Secondary’s Clean and Green Team. The Salmon Lady invited students to the salmon run this year. Mr. Everett of the Chase Rotary Club said the service club is very proud of Haldane student for all they have done for the environment. Mrs. Patterson read the message from BC Hydro about the two checks for $600. for the Community Champions Award. (one for Haldane and one for Chase Secondary) and one for $1,000. to the Stream of Dreams Mural Society in recognition of the beautiful wooden fish painted by Haldane students.
