Your Favourite Foods

Trace all the paths the various ingredients of your favourite meal have taken (how they were grown, harvested, processed, packaged and distributed) before ending up in your mouth. If pizza is a favourite, be sure to include dough, sauce, cheese, veggies, spices, and so on.

Agriculture is the science, art and business of farming. Farming is using land to grow crops such as fruits, vegetables and grains, and to raise animals such as cattle, sfheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys and fish, for food and other products.

Food is a basic necessity of life. Without food and water, we cannot survive. Food provides the energy we need to do things. When we are hungry, we go to the kitchen to find something to eat - an apple from the fridge, crackers from the cupboard - but how often do we think about where the food actually came from and how it was made?

Think About It!

Bananas and pineapples are not grown in Canada because of our cold climate. What other fruits travel many kilometres to end up in our grocery stores?

Food production starts on the farm. And sometimes, it's a long journey from the field to your table (just think about kiwis, mangoes and oranges!).

Before it can be consumed, food must be grown, processed and prepared, then delivered by distributors to retail stores for purchasing.

Did You Know...?

An estimated nine out of every 10 bites of food available to people across the world begins with the planting of seeds.
