Help warn drivers about frogs crossing roads

First you need to find out if there is a road in your city/town that frogs need to cross. If there are, you need to find out what time of the year frogs will be crossing the road.
To find this out you can ask:

  • a local nature group
  • a local conservation area
  • the person who looks after frog monitoring in your province/territory. If they don't know they can probably give you some more ideas of people to call to find out.

After you find out when and where frogs will be crossing roads in your city/town you can do any or all of the following. (You will need an adult to help you out a little bit with all of these ideas.)

Put An Add In Your Local Paper

Put an add in your local paper

About a week before frogs are going to be crossing roads in your area, put an ad in the newspaper. Put the ad in the "Upcoming Events" section, if there is one. Let people know that the "event" is frogs migrating. Tell people what roads frogs will be crossing and when. Ask people to take another road during this time, if possible. If they have to use the road ask them to watch out for frogs so they don't end up squashing them.

Announce It On TV

Announce it on TV

Many local TV stations will have something called a "Notice Board." Call your local TV station to find out. If there is a "Notice Board" put up an announcement just before and during frog migration in your area. Make sure you include where and when frogs will be migrating. You can also ask if the weather person could make announcements during the weather forecast at the time of year frog migration is taking place.

Make a "Frog Crossing" Sign for Drivers

Make a 'frog crossing' sign

You can't just make your own sign and put it up. You could get in big trouble. You have to have permission from the town. If the town decides the frog sign is a good idea the Public Works or Roads Department will do it.

Call your city/town hall and ask who you should talk to about getting a frog crossing sign put up. Call one of your city/town councillors and ask them for help. Be ready to explain why you think a frog crossing sign is a good idea. You might ask the same person you asked about when and where frogs cross roads in your town/city to help you out with this too. Don't worry if you don't see any action right away. These things take time. Just be patient and keep working on it.
