Are All Trees the Same?

Canadian Forests

Trees come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. There is an incredible diversity of tree species around the world -- some 60,000 to 70,000 species of trees have been identified!

In Canada, there are about 180 species of trees in 417.6 million hectares of forested land and about 3,000 other plant species, woven into ecosystems that provide habitat for roughly 200,000 species of animals and microorganisms.

There are two major types of trees: coniferous and deciduous. The two most common types are known as coniferous trees (or conifers), and deciduous trees. Learn more about each type on the next page.

29.6 per cent of the world's land area is covered by forest. About 10 per cent of that is in Canada.
