Narwhal
Common Name:

Narwhal

Scientific Name:

Monodon monoceros

Unique Qualities:

The most striking feature of the narwhal is the long tusk coming out of the heads of males. The tusk is actually two teeth coming out of the upper jaw that can grow to up to 2.5m in length. Some studies suggest that the tusk serves as a tool in fights between males. However, that has not yet been proven. Narwhals also have up-curled flippers. A narwhal's maximum life span is about 50 years.

Can be Seen:

The narwhal is found around Baffin Island and the Arctic ice edge. It can be seen eastwards from the Canadian Arctic through much of Russia. It is rare in Siberia and Alaska.

Likes to Hang Out:

The narwhal likes to hang out in the icy waters of the Arctic seas. It rarely strays far from the ice. In summer, it infrequently enters estuaries, deep fjords, and bays.

Likes to Eat:

The narwhal likes to eat fish, squid, shrimp, and other marine animals.

Status:

It is estimated that the global population of narwhals is roughly 25,000 to 45,000 individuals. Narwhals are preyed upon by humans (Inuit hunters legally hunt narwhals), polar bears, orcas, sharks, and walruses. In the past, narwhals have been hunted for their tusks which are used for jewelry, as well as for their blubber and oil.
