Lagopus mutus

Can be Seen:

Ptarmigans can be seen in the alpine and arctic tundra all over the northern hemisphere. This includes northern Quebec and the Northwest Territories.

Likes to Hang Out:

The rock ptarmigan likes to hang out in thickets in the tundra, willows and heath in alpine areas.

Likes to Eat:

When snow covers the ground, ptarmigans eat willow buds, willow twigs and a little bit of birch. When the snow melts they feast upon insects, over-wintered berries, new leaves and flowers.

Status:

Hunters and loss of habitat are still threatening ptarmigans.

I live in the North! Meet my neighbours.
