Project: Water for Africa
The students in Grade 2P at Heritage Heights School learned about the social, health and environmental importance of water. They became passionate when they realized that not everyone has access to clean drinking water and that many girls in Africa miss school so that they can collect water.
With the aid of a local artist, the students created water-related artwork. They decided that by turning their art into greeting cards, awareness of water issues in Africa could be promoted and money could be raised to help African communities.
They have already raised over $600 for Water for People via PlayPump International and sales of the cards continue. In addition, the students created an informational video so they could educate even more people. Congratulations 2P on your fantastic work!
Junior Winner
Pictou Landing First Nation School - Pictou Landing, NS
Teacher: Angie Campbell
Project: Earth Day is Everyday
The students of Pictou Landing First Nation School identified that litter is an issue within their community. They prepared speeches to motivate the community and a Stop Litter Pledge program.
The children recognized that if they wanted to reach their goal of getting the community clean and keeping it clean then they needed to act as role models. The students started the community clean up, organized a recycling depot, held a yard clean up contest with environmental prizes and a recycled costume contest judged by community Elders. They also visited a windmill station and refused to be satisfied until the whole community was cleaned up!
Congratulations Pictou Landing First Nation School on an awesome job!
Intermediate Winner
Roberta Bondar Public School - Brampton, ON
Teacher: Sarah Downes
Project: Walking School Bus
Regardless of weather, every Wednesday the students of Roberta Bondar Public School led and participated in a Walking School Bus program. Children that live within walking distance were encouraged to walk to school rather than being driven. Student leaders were trained and provided a safe way for everyone to travel together. In addition, students surveyed cars to assess the volume of traffic and noticed a reduction in traffic on school property and streets every Wednesday.
The Walking School Bus program has led to a reduction in vehicular traffic in the community, improving the health of students and the environment.
Congratulations Roberta Bondar Public School on a job well done!
