Learn About Alberta’s Tar Sands
Posted by: Your EcoKids Program Manager in Climate Change, Energy, Land UseOil sand is oil which is trapped in sand under the earth’s surface. Canada’s oil sand is found in three major areas in Alberta. The largest of these areas is the Athabasca Oil Sands. It is the largest petroleum resource in the world. All of Alberta’s deposits combined together hold about 1.7 trillion barrels of oil. That’s alot of oil that we don’t have to import from other countries.
However, some people believe that the extracting oil from the oil sands is very harmful to the environment because it requires alot of water and energy. Also, they say that the oil from the oil sands produce five times as many greenhouse gases as conventional oil.
Find out more about this controversial issue by watching the CBC document called “Tar Sands, the Selling of Alberta” http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/tarsands/ It will be on next week. Check the link to see when you can watch it in your city.
