Canada has a decentralized government, which means that decision-making power does not lay with department or one province but shared across the country. As a result, the provinces and territories have a lot of say when it comes to making policies, including those that affect our environment.

So on January 28th, there was a premiers’ conference in Vancouver to talk about climate change.

Now we haven’t heard much in the news about what happened at the conference but we hope that they have made some good decisions that will help slow down climate change. We should keep our ears open to see what they’ve decided on. So far we know that the Premiers have had a hard time agreeing on how fast, or how deep to make cuts to greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. British Columbia wants to cut carbon emissions 80% by 2050, while Alberta is offering only 14% reduction.
