You’ve heard of organic food, but organic clothing?

You might think that the traditional cotton T-shirt is clean, fresh, and natural, but it’s anything but! Did you know that it takes 150 grams of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to produce the cotton for just one T-shirt? 150 grams may not seem like alot but think of how many cotton T-shirts, pants, and dresses are made everyday all over the world. That means lots of unhealthy exposure for farmers and wildlife, and lots of unnecessary pollution.

Organic clothing comes from all-natural materials (no synthetics like polyester or rayon). No chemicals are used to grow the cotton/hemp/linen/bamboo, or whatever plant we’re talking about. Also, the plant is NOT genetically modified (otherwise known as GMOs).

Next time you’re out shopping with your parents or friends, look out for organic clothing. If you know of a place that sells organic clothing, tell others about it by posting a comment!

I know that Mountain Equipment Co-op (www.mec.ca) and Cotton Ginny (www.cottonginny.ca) carry organic clothing.

Environmentally friendly cleaners are available at Noah’s Natural foods in Toronto, Ontario(www.noahnaturalfoods.ca) and Ambrosia Natural Foods in Thornhill, Ontario (www.ambrosianaturalfoods.com), and Whole Foods Market (www.wholefoodsmarket.com).

Anyone know of others across Canada?

Hi, Just came across two websites, Janice’s (which I think is from the States, but they do mailorder) and Salts, which is based on the West Coast, but has some stores in Ontario which sell their products. One is called Heart on You Sleeve,(not a typo) which is shown on the map to be near the U of T. Hope that helps!

I’m writing an article for my school newspaper. I think the stores that were mentioned will be useful to some kids at my school-most of them don’t know anything about organic clothes. I think showing them other options like this is really life changing. Maybe someone i know will actually buy some eco-friendly products. And all because of you! :)

    cheers

Just to let you know (a little late!!) Walmart does carry green cleaning products now, such as Laundry soap and dishwashing soap – they’re called “Bio-Vert”. I’ve also found the Cascades line of products (paper towels, toilet paper) there too, and they are 100% recycled.

If anyone knows of a place in Toronto that carries organic kids clothing (not baby stuff) for older children (i.e. 4-6x sizes) I would love to hear about it…I have searched everywhere on the web and cannot find such a thing. I am looking for basics such as leggings, tees, socks, undies, etc.

I myself use organic yoga clothes while doing yoga and meditation. Organic yoga clothing is made from cotton, hemp or bamboo that is grown without any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Organically-grown fibers produce yarn that is softer and more durable, and breathes easier against the skin. These characteristics are especially important in yoga wear. Carrot Banana Peach, the company from which I purchase my clothes are comfortable, stylish and stretchable.

Roots http://www.roots.ca is making great headway with their adult and baby lines in organic cotton and using other eco fabrics like bamboo and microfibre. Mark’s Work Warehouse has great undies and socks for men and women. H&M has an organic line and the Gap is dabbling in baby organic clothes. I also hear American Appareal may carry eco fabrics as well. We need more options, support those doing the right thing!

There’s a great eco-friendly online store based in Vancouver that carries tons of products for babies and kids including organic clothing. They’ll ship anywhere in Canada and the US. Their address is http://www.mylittlegreenshop.com It’s a mom and pop and I think it’s great to support businesses like theirs.
