Organic Clothing
Posted by: Your EcoKids Program Manager in Consumer Habits, Environmental IssuesYou’ve heard of organic food, but organic clothing?
You might think that the traditional cotton T-shirt is clean, fresh, and natural, but it’s anything but! Did you know that it takes 150 grams of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to produce the cotton for just one T-shirt? 150 grams may not seem like alot but think of how many cotton T-shirts, pants, and dresses are made everyday all over the world. That means lots of unhealthy exposure for farmers and wildlife, and lots of unnecessary pollution.
Organic clothing comes from all-natural materials (no synthetics like polyester or rayon). No chemicals are used to grow the cotton/hemp/linen/bamboo, or whatever plant we’re talking about. Also, the plant is NOT genetically modified (otherwise known as GMOs).
Next time you’re out shopping with your parents or friends, look out for organic clothing. If you know of a place that sells organic clothing, tell others about it by posting a comment!

I think it would be a great idea to encourage the use or organic clothing but where do we buy?
What stores carry the stuff?
I’d like to know.
I also wish we could buy environmentally friendly cleaners at Walmart. Where do you find those???

I know that Mountain Equipment Co-op (www.mec.ca) and Cotton Ginny (www.cottonginny.ca) carry organic clothing.
Environmentally friendly cleaners are available at Noah’s Natural foods in Toronto, Ontario(www.noahnaturalfoods.ca) and Ambrosia Natural Foods in Thornhill, Ontario (www.ambrosianaturalfoods.com), and Whole Foods Market (www.wholefoodsmarket.com).
Anyone know of others across Canada?

One of the best places to find organic childrens and baby clothes are at Jonano Organic Clothing and Bamboo Clothing. They have their own line of Sami Designs Baby clothes made from all natural materials like organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo. Its funny that more companies don’t offer these materials. From my experience working with organic clothes its easy to see the amazing benefits not only the earth but to our own childrens happiness and futures. Check out Jonano.com if you get a chance or their baby clothes at Jonano Bamboo Clothing for Babies

Hi, Just came across two websites, Janice’s (which I think is from the States, but they do mailorder) and Salts, which is based on the West Coast, but has some stores in Ontario which sell their products. One is called Heart on You Sleeve,(not a typo) which is shown on the map to be near the U of T. Hope that helps!

I own and operate an All Natural and Organic cleaning service. I use some of Method’s products. The only downside is that the majority of my clients use my services because they are sensitive or allergic to harsh smelly cleaners. Method does have a strong sent. However, I have recently seen a new non perfume variety they are offering. I think it’s called Bare Naked?
Anyway, check out my website…

I’m writing an article for my school newspaper. I think the stores that were mentioned will be useful to some kids at my school-most of them don’t know anything about organic clothes. I think showing them other options like this is really life changing. Maybe someone i know will actually buy some eco-friendly products. And all because of you!
cheers

Just to let you know (a little late!!) Walmart does carry green cleaning products now, such as Laundry soap and dishwashing soap – they’re called “Bio-Vert”. I’ve also found the Cascades line of products (paper towels, toilet paper) there too, and they are 100% recycled.
If anyone knows of a place in Toronto that carries organic kids clothing (not baby stuff) for older children (i.e. 4-6x sizes) I would love to hear about it…I have searched everywhere on the web and cannot find such a thing. I am looking for basics such as leggings, tees, socks, undies, etc.

One of the best organic baby clothing sites I have found so far is BabyBam Collection – http://www.babybamcollection.com – they not only have adorable jammies, onesies, and wash towel sets for infants all made out of bamboo … they have the most luxurious bamboo powder bath soap which I had not been able to find in any other store. The bamboo bar soap is called “Little Lathers” – and it leaves my skin in the shower soft from gentle exfoliating … and my baby uses it in the tub with me also. handmade – no chemicals – it’s lovely.

We also own an online baby boutique called Ethicbaby (www.ethicbaby.com) selling organic baby wear, bamboo accessories, wooden toys. We are based in BC. I myself use organic yoga clothes while doing yoga and meditation. Organic yoga clothing is made from cotton, hemp or bamboo that is grown without any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Organically-grown fibers produce yarn that is softer and more durable, and breathes easier against the skin. These characteristics are especially important in yoga wear. Carrot Banana Peach, the company from which I purchase my clothes are comfortable, stylish and stretchable.

every food that we eat should come from Organic Farming. i really get scared about those toxins coming from chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. I only eat foods which are certified that they are organically grown

Roots http://www.roots.ca is making great headway with their adult and baby lines in organic cotton and using other eco fabrics like bamboo and microfibre. Mark’s Work Warehouse has great undies and socks for men and women. H&M has an organic line and the Gap is dabbling in baby organic clothes. I also hear American Appareal may carry eco fabrics as well. We need more options, support those doing the right thing!
